16th century, grey Cotswold stone manor house with many Civil War associations including the tapestry-lined rooms stayed in by Cromwell and his second-in-command, General Ireton, in 1648. The house was added to at the turn of the last century and features the Edwardian Ballroom.

Features: In the 'vista' garden is the family chapel.

This property offers free access to HHA Friends and Members during normal opening hours - please check opening times.


1.75m NW of Tetbury between B4104 & A4135. 7 m SE of Stroud.

Visitor Opening Times

2017: Summer: May – September Thursday, Sundays & Bank Holiday Mondays plus Easter Sunday & Monday 2–5pm. Last admission 4pm.

NB. Will open on any day and at other times by prior arrangement for groups. Winter; October – March: by appointment only for groups.

No special facilities but have helped local school with GCSE History especially Tudors & Stuarts.

Groups and special visits

Lived in Elizabethan manor house, guided tours by owner or his family. Chavenage has been used as a location for numbers of TV productions - Civil war connections resulting in the legend of Chavenage (The Headless Coachman). Will open throughout the year at any time for pre-arranged groups.
