Woodchester Mansion is a Grade I listed house built in the Victorian Gothic style. It is unfinished, so offers visitors a rare opportunity to see how a building of this period was constructed.

Construction started in the mid-1850s and work went on sporadically until about 1870 when work stopped, though the Drawing Room was completed in 1894. The building is now owned by Stroud District Council and is managed by Woodchester Mansion Trust. It will never be completed.

The architect was a young local man called Benjamin Bucknall, and he and his patron, the wealthy William Leigh, both newly-converted Catholics, were admirers of the important French architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. There is a strong French influence in the style of the house which also makes Woodchester slightly different from other buildings of its type and time. In addition, Leigh was a perfectionist who exerted a strong and active influence on all the work he undertook, ensuring that the quality of the craftsmanship in the house is very high.

The Mansion hosts up to 1000 greater and lesser horseshoe bats which use the building as a maternity roost. The bats, in their roosts, can be seen via CCTV in the Bat Observation Room.
