Sennowe Park, Guist, Norfolk, NR20 5PB

Sennowe Park is one of Norfolk’s most Romantic and impressive large Edwardian country houses. It was built to grand design by Thomas Albert Cook, grandson of Thomas Cook who founded the famous travel firm in the mid 19th century. He commissioned George Skipper to make a radical transformation of an existing late 18th century house on the site. Skipper had become Norfolk’s leading architect of the day, and at Sennowe he drew upon his classical inclinations in an imaginative and rich articulation of Edwardian design. The effect, described as ‘hectic’ by one breathless admirer, and by another as ‘ebullient’, is decorated, but warm and approachable.

The house is set upon a knoll, its broad Italianate garden terraces overlooking rolling parkland which sweeps down to the lake and the boathouse. The veranda of the boathouse is supported on stilts facing towards the West and the setting sun. The house has much intricate and detailed carving and impressive roof statues and the gardens have stone balustrading and ornamental urns and statues. Two colonnades offer dramatic perspective. The stable yard, which is accessed through huge decorated wrought iron gates, contains eleven Edwardian loose boxes. An Italianate water tower houses a working belfry and makes a major landmark at a height of 120ft. The walled garden encloses half an acre and contains an Edwardian greenhouse the entire length of one side. The Winter Garden is 70ft glass house containing a fountain and a beautiful square patterned marble floor.

Visitor Opening Times

Sennowe is a private family home, and not open to the public, and therefore all weddings, events and accommodation are arranged on a bespoke basis.

Please note that these opening times are correct to the best of the HHA’s knowledge, as advised by the property. Opening times may change and a property may very occasionally need to close at short notice. We therefore recommend you check with the property before your visit, by phone or on the property’s website, especially if your journey is likely to be a long one.

Film Locations

Sennowe Park offers a wide variety of opportunities for the film, TV and advertising industries and the list of possible locations is endless. The house is rich with intricate and original detail which has been painstakingly preserved and the rooms are individual in style and character. The exquisite 70ft Winter Garden, with its fine marble floor and columned fountain, and the striking 50ft Long Room can both be used as large capacity studios.

We are experienced in the demands of a busy crew having had filming here for Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Tales of the Unexpected, My Talks with Dean Spanley starring Peter O’Toole and a 6 week reality series for Channel 4 among others. Recent photographic clients include British Vogue, Tatler and Pepe Jeans. We can offer accommodation to the crew which at full capacity is to in excess of 20 people.
