Strawberry Hill House

This property is free for HHA Friends
268 Waldegrave Road, Twickenham, London, TW1 4ST
020 8744 1241

Strawberry Hill is Britain's finest example of Georgian Gothic Revival architecture and interior decoration. It began life in 1698 as a modest house, later transformed into 'a little Gothic castle' by Horace Walpole, the son of England's first Prime Minister. Between 1747 and 1792 Walpole doubled its size, creating extraordinary rooms and adding towers and battlements.

This property offers free access to HHA Friends and Members during normal opening hours - please check opening times.

Strawberry Hill was already a tourist site in its own day and has survived into ours, its rural surroundings gone, but its charm undiminished.

Following an £8.9 million restoration, the house is now open to the public as an extraordinary fairytale experience.

On Waldegrave Road, Twickenham, near stops for buses 33 (Fulwell – Hammersmith), R68 (Hampton Court – Kew Retail Park). Nearest National Rail Station is Strawberry Hill (10 minutes walk). Nearest Underground is District Line at Richmond (then R68 bus). 15 mins from M3.

Educational Facilities

We aim to create a supportive learning environment to inspire a love of Gothic Art, architecture, literature and history, through creativity, self guided and guided learning.

At the core of this major restoration project was the creation of a comprehensive education and interpretation centre using the restored House as its focus. Our aim is to provide an innovative and community-serving place providing enjoyment for a wide range of audiences.

The education facilities include two purpose-built education rooms, both equipped with computers and AV equipment, and one designed as a wet room for arts and crafts and other more practical activities.
