Johnby, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 0UU

A sixteenth-century manor house built onto a fourteenth-century pele tower; it was bought by the Duke of Norfolk, of nearby Greystoke Castle, in 1783 and has remained in the Howard family ever since. It is now home for Henry and Anna and their young family. The house remains in many respects unchanged, though lovingly restored with some arts-and-crafts features by Great Aunt Maud around 1900. The informal gardens include a seventeenth-century walled orchard and the interesting remains of an eighteenth-century water garden; free range chickens, rare breed pigs and red squirrels all roam within the grounds.

Henry and Anna and their young family, are delighted to welcome guests for bed and breakfast accommodation all year round. The house remains in many respects unchanged, though lovingly restored. Two delightful suites are available for bed and breakfast, one in a Jacobean wing, one in a garden cottage, each large enough for a family. Quiet nights; comfy beds; breakfast featuring our home-reared rare-breed bacon and eggs, served in the great hall. Supper by arrangement. Dogs and children of all ages welcome.
