Learning

Britain’s historic houses, castles, gardens and estates are amongst the most visited and best loved places in the UK, welcoming well over 60 million visits each year. The Historic Houses Association represents an astonishing variety of our rich built and cultural heritage, including some of Britain’s iconic properties. The HHA’s diverse membership offers substantial public access and opportunities for enjoyment, with an unrivalled ability to provide a range of audience-focused learning opportunities.
The HHA is at the forefront of initiatives to maximise the educational potential that exists at Britain’s historic properties. The historic environment provides the single most powerful way of engaging people with history and heritage sites offers visitors a richness and range of activities and experiences that bring history to life like nothing else.
Historic places can also be used to explore a variety of subjects from art to architecture, politics to philosophy, geography to gardening, mathematics, science and even design and fashion.

However, the impact and opportunities these sites offer go even further. Structured learning programmes are successful not only in terms of new knowledge, but also in developing skills, confidence and self-esteem. Historic places fire the imagination, channel creative thought and help people develop new skills.
The HHA’s
Learning Advisory Service, now in its fifth year of operation, is a tailored resource for Members wishing to explore their educational potential or to develop what they are already doing. It offers personal support, advice and assistance to help our Members look at how heritage can be used to create stimulating and exciting learning environments for a wide range of audiences.
