Privately owned historic houses are special places. Many are still family homes, lived in by the descendants of the familes which built them. Private ownership offers the best security for their stewardship because owners have a long term commitment to their conservation and are cost conscious.
There are 1,620 member houses in membership of the HHA, throughout the United Kingdom, from large stately homes to small manor houses. This combination of houses, contents, works of art, gardens and parks forms a unique contribution to our nation's heritage.
