HHA Scotland
Following the creation of the Scottish Parliament, HHA Scotland was strengthened to anticipate, monitor and respond to legislation and policies in Scotland affecting Members' interests.
The activities of HHA Scotland are directed by a Scottish Council, supported by a Business Committee. HHA Scotland is led by its Chairman, since June 2009, Alick Hay, of Duns Castle. Sally Hampton joined HHA Scotland in May 2009 as its first Co-ordinator, supporting its administration and representation.
In June 2011 HHA Scotland and Scottish Land & Estates (formerly SRPBA) announced a strategic partnership, to help conserve the best of Scotland's unique built heritage, by actively supporting house owners and rural landowners in their efforts to conserve privately-owned historic properties.
Initiatives by HHA Scotland in recent years include:
- a conference in November 2005, on Positive Stewardship, in the Scottish Parliament, jointly organised with Historic Scotland, which led to the establishment of the Historic Properties Group, with Historic Scotland, National Trust for Scotland and HHA Scotland representation
- a Conservation Seminar in October 2006, at Hopetoun House
- publication of an HHA Scotland Manifesto in advance of the Scottish Parliamentary elections in May 2007
- persuading Historic Scotland to introduce Maintenance Plan Grants in 2008
- Scotland's Historic Properties: Visiting the Future Seminar - a joint seminar on heritage tourism in Scotland with Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland, September 2008
- an Energy Seminar 'being Energy Smart - New Solutions for Historic Houses' organised in partnership with Scottish Land & Estates - held at Arniston House in October 2010
- A Vision Statement, following the Scottish Parliamentary elections in 2011, supported by Scottish Land & Estates, to demonstrate the scale of the contribution of independently owned historic houses to the economy, culture and wider well-being of Scotland. The statement puts forward initiatives for promoting heritage tourism, reducing the regulatory burden on historic house businesses and supporting the physical fabric of Scotland's heritage.
