Border stronghold dating from the 12th century and in form a four-square, 14th century courtyard castle, retaining to the full its medieval character. Restored from near ruin by its present owner, Sir Humphrey Wakefield Bt, it houses an eclectic and fascinating collection.

At first a 12th century stronghold, Chillingham became a fortified castle in the 14th century. In Tudor days there were additions but the medieval character has been retained. In the 18th and 19th centuries decorative refinements were added including the lake, garden and grounds. House and Grounds open Easter, 1st May - 30 September.
