Home to the Sitwell family for nearly 400 years. The famous literary trio, Edith, Osbert, and Sacheverell Sitwell were all patrons of the arts and played a significant part in the artistic and literary world at the beginning of the 20th century. Renishaw is still very much a family home which adds to its unique atmosphere. The Hall is open to the public for the first time this year. There are tours every Friday at 2.30pm but booking is recommended to avoid disappointment. A tour of the Hall enables you to see some of the spectacular collections of art and furniture acquired by generations of Sitwells.
Over 100 years ago Sir George Sitwell created what is today one of the most important classical Italianate gardens in Britain. Ornamental ponds , a spectacular fountain, secret garden rooms, classical statues, overflowing borders and long vistas all feature strongly in these totally unique gardens. The kids will love the Children's Garden where there are silhouettes of children's characters which are hidden in the trees - the Cheshire Cat and Mary Poppins to name but a few. They can also explore the living willow tunnel.
In the Stable Block you can visit the Sitwell Museum, Gallery Café and Gift Shop and an exhibition featuring the amazing collections of Sir Osbert Sitwell, many items have never been seen before including works by Picasso, Rex Whistler, Dylan Thomas and Wilfred Owen.
Many exciting events take place during the year so look at the website or ring for details. Renishaw is open to visitors from Thursday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays until 26th September from 10.30am – 4.30pm.
