The present castle was built between 1745 and 1790 on the instructions of the 3rd Duke of Argyll to designs by Roger Morris to replace a 15th century fortified keep. The interiors were planned by Robert Mylne for the 5th Duke. A third floor and the conical roofs on the corner towers were added at the end of the last century to designs by Salvin. On display is a superb armoury collection containing some 1,300 pieces, French tapestries, Scottish and European furniture, paintings and other works of art, and a genealogical display in the Clan Campbell Room.
