Early 18th century farmhouse set in beautiful countryside on the edge of the Weald, with views over the South Downs in a one hectare garden which contains many modern sculptures.
In 1949 Surrealists Lee Miller (photographer) and Roland Penrose (artist) moved here and the house soon became the meeting place of some of the key figures of modern art including Picasso, Man Ray, Max Ernst and Joan Miró. Their work is now displayed throughout the house giving visitors a fabulous insight into the lives and art of Miller, Penrose and their friends.
Farley Farm House is open to visitors on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month (April – October) when the house is open from 10am until 3.30pm. The tour takes approximately 50 minutes, after which there is an opportunity to visit the sculpture garden, gift shop and Farleys Barn Gallery. Tickets are available from reception on arrival.
Please contact the property for up to date opening times
Numerous documentaries have been made on the lives of Roland Penrose and Lee Miller for CH4, BB2, ARTE (distributed on SKY) and German TV. Please see the book 'The Home of the Surrealists' by Antony Penrose, published by Frances Lincoln, for excellent photographs of the interiors and garden.
