Royal stronghold dating back to 547 AD, with a huge square Norman keep dominating the coastal sand dunes and views across to Lindisfarne. Restored late last century by Lord Armstrong, the castle now contains collections of armour, porcelain and paintings by Kneller and others. Features include a Saxon well, medieval windmill and substantial fortifications.
2010: Daily, 1 Mar-31 Oct, 10am-5pm, weekends 1 Nov-28 Feb, 11am-4.30pm. Last admission 1 hour before closing.
