This property is free for HHA Friends
A Grade 2* listed Elizabethan family house dating from 1585. Situated within some 500 acres of landscaped 18th Century parkland with formal gardens designed c. 1890 that include a series of “garden rooms” filled with clipped box, a lily pond, Romanesque loggia, warm brick walls, unusual doors, secret passageways, beautiful topiary work, roses and a walled garden.
In the grounds of the Hall there are working stables, estate cottages and the parish church of St Laurence which contains two Mainwaring Chapels.
Immediately adjacent to the Hall is the attractive coach house topped with a working bell tower added by Sir Henry Mainwaring in 1764. Within this building are the architectural jewel; Grade I - listed Carolean stables built in 1654, with richly carved stalls and original Tuscan columns and strap work.
During World War II the house was requisitioned as the HQ for General George Patton of the United States 3rd Army to train for the D-Day landings in 1944, it also housed a POW camp and was ravaged by a fire started by a soldier in 1944 and has been the largest restoration project undertaken by the Estate to date.
In addition, there are numerous public footpaths throughout the 18th Century park all of which are accessible from the car park. The parkland is great for bird watching; be sure not to miss the beautiful lake too.
