The home of Richard and Lucinda Compton, Newby Hall is one of England's renowned Adam houses. In the 1760s William Weddell, an ancestor of the Comptons, acquired a magnificent collection of ancient Roman sculpture and Gobelins tapestries. He commissioned Robert Adam to alter the original Wren-designed house, and Thomas Chippendale to make furniture. The result is a perfect example of the Georgian 'Age of Elegance' with the atmosphere and ambience of a family home.
25 acres of stunning award-winning gardens contain rare and beautiful shubs and plants, including the National Collection of the genus Cornus (dogwoods). Newby's famous double herbaceous borders make the perfect walkway to the River Ure. Formal gardens such as the Autumn and Rose Garden, the tranquility of Sylvia's Garden and a Tropical Garden make Newby an inspiring and exciting place to explore. Walking through the curved pergolas leads to the Victorian Rock Garden, which is an enchanting, magical space for all ages. The gardens feature an exciting Children's Adventure Garden and Miniature Railway.

Newby Hall has been used as a location for a variety of productions. The house and its interiors, and the beautiful grounds (whatever the season), are all ideal settings for costume dramas, feature films and documentaries. During March 2007 ITVs adaptation of Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park' was filmed entirely on location at Newby.
Newby Hall presents endless opportunities for an inspirational educational visit. The ancient sculptures in the Statue Gallery and the modern sculptures on the contemporary Sculpture Trail give wonderful scope for discovering the arts. The woodland walk and garden provide a wealth of material, while the house itself is a very special environment in which to explore form, colour, design and mathematical proportion as well as architecture and social history.
