The house, garden and orangery form an exotic Indian fantasy with Hindu and Muslim architecture. Charles Cockerell of the East India Company commissioned his brother to build the house with advice from Humphrey Repton and the painter Thomas Daniell in the latter part of the 18th century. The result : a Moghul confection in the Cotswolds.
Features: Exotic water garden by Humphrey Repton and Thomas Daniell to emulate a Moghul paradise garden, neglected until 1945 and since restored with advice from Graham Thomas. Ornaments include a temple to the Sun God, Surya, statues of Brahmin bulls and a coiled 3-headed snake.
Garden: Thursday, Fridays & Bank Holiday Mondays, 2–6pm (dusk if earlier) throughout the year except December. House: Open as Garden but closed October–April. Groups at any time by written appointment. Tea and cake in Orangery when house open.
