The Tower was built in 1577 for Sir John Carmichael, a friend if King James VI, who was warden of the Scottish Middlemarch and responsible for policing the border between Scotland and England. In 1603, after the death of Sir John Carmichael, King James VI granted the Tower to Sir Thomas Erskine. In 1631 Fenton Tower passed to Sir John Maxwell, but his enjoyment of the house was short-lived because in 1650 Oliver Cromwell's invading Republican army sacked the Tower, leaving it ruined. The house lay empty for 352 years until Ian Simpson and his life-long friend John Macaskill decided to restore the Tower and convert it into a comfortable modern residence. Fenton Tower played host to its first over-night guests for more then 350 years in 2002 after a 2-year restoration process.
Fenton Tower will open by appointment only. All enquiries should be made to the manager.
