Commissioned by William Crichton Dalrymple, the 5th Earl of Dumfries, Dumfries House is Robert Adam's most important early work. With over 600 items of furniture, many of which remain in situ as designed and intended for the house, the Dumfries collection represents an unrivalled opportunity to enjoy one of the most comprehensive collections of furniture by Thomas Chippendale and a unique range of work by the contemporary Edinburgh cabinet makers Alexander Peter, William Mathie and Francis Brodie.
In 2008 Dumfries House will be open for tours between 6th June and 31st October 2008. Access is by guided tour only. Tours last for one hour and set off every half an hour, starting from 10.00am. Last tour starts at 3.30pm. The maximum number of visitors per tour is limited to 18.
Tours are only available by 'pre-booking' through the booking line (01290 551111).
