Situated in Hertfordshire, just 21 miles north of London, Hatfield House provides an opportunity for visitors to see a fine House and Garden in a spectacular countryside setting. Home of the Marquess of Salisbury, the Estate has been in the Cecil family for 400 years. Superb examples of Jacobean craftsmanship, the House is steeped in Elizabethan and Victorian political history and has a fine collection of pictures, tapestries and furnishings. The Royal Palace of Hatfield (c 1485) in the West Garden is where Elizabeth I spend much of her childhood. In November 1558, Elizabeth was proclaimed Queen and held her first Council in the Great Hall. Visitors can enjoy extensive walks in the 1000 acres of Park with woodland trails and play area. The Garden dates from the early 17th century when Robert Cecil employed John Tradescant the Elder to collect plants for his new home. The West Garden includes a scented garden, herb garden and knot garden. The East Garden, Lord & Lady Salisbury's private garden is open to the public on Thursday. Home of the National Collection of Model Soldiers. Coach House Restaurant open for morning coffee, lunches and afternoon tea. Gift Shop, Picnic area.
