Drumkilbo is a listed historic building (including the walled garden). The house itself is mid 19th century Georgian with a 13th century stone spiral staircase at its core. The first recorded owner of Drumkilbo was King Robert the Bruce, who gave it to Morice de Tiry in about 1300. In 1650 it became the property of the Nairne family who played a leading role in the defence of Scotland against Cromwell’s army. Lord Wharncliffe purchased Drumkilbo in about 1851 and sold it to Edward Cox in 1900. The Cox family at that time were the leading proprietors of the Jute industry in Dundee. It is a wonderful house for entertaining with a large dining room, three reception rooms and a billiard room. The Drumkilbo gardens have attracted many visitors through the years and are now open to the public once a year as part of Scotland’s garden scheme. The sixteen acres of landscaped grounds includes fine mature specimen trees (recently catalogued by the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh), Azalea and Rhododendron walks, a walled garden, a croquet lawn and an outdoor swimming pool (available during May to September).
