The house is thought to have been built in 1598 by David Erskine, Commendator of Inchmahome Priory on the island in the Lake of Menteith where Mary, Queen of Scots lived as a child. There is a lintel above a second storey window with D.E. and M.H.(for his wife Margaret Haldane of Gleneagles) and the date 1598 carved on it, but there may have been an earlier tower house which he altered and extended at that date.
For about a hundred years after 1628 the Erskine family fortunes were at a low ebb and the house was probably neglected until John Erskine, an Edinburgh lawyer, from another branch of the family, bought the estate of Cardross in 1746 for 8290 sterling. His initials, with those of his second wife Anne Stirling of Keir, and the date 1747 are carved above another window and this is probably the date when he restored the house. It is likely that the Dining room, a Georgian style room, dates from the restoration of the house by John Erskine in 1747.
In the \"Letters of John Ramsay of Ochtertyre 1799-1812\" there are constant references to Cardross house and to his comings and goings with his friends the Erskines and it continued to be an Erskine property until it was bought by Archie Orr Ewing's grandparents in 1920. Nicola and Archie Orr Ewing live in the house which they have recently restored and modernised.
