One of the marvels of high Victorian gothic architecture. The 3rd Marquess of Bute, a convert to the Roman church and scholarly aesthete, called in the architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson in 1880 to build a new mansion which in red sandstone combined Venetian gothic with earlier high pointed style. Highlights are the soaring Great Hall and the Chapel in Carrara white marble with red stained glass windows. Inside is a rich collection of pictures, both family portraits and old masters, including work by Reynolds, Gainsborough and Ramsay.
Features: The gardens, in more than 300 acres of woodland, contain a mature Victorian pinetum, an arboretum and exotic gardens; Rock Garden conceived by Thomas Mawson, and more recent work to the Kitchen Garden by Rosemary Verey.
