Home of the Boyle family since 1140, the early Norman keep was greatly enlarged in 1581, and a fine William and Mary mansion was added by the 1st Earl of Glasgow in 1700. It was further extended in 1879 by the 6th Earl. Memorabilia from New Zealand and the South Pacific was collected by the 7th Earl, who was Governor of New Zealand in 1892.
Features: Walled 'Plaisance' Garden with two 1,000-year old yews and other exotic shrubs; dramatic glen with woodland trails, waterfalls and deep gorges; Adam monument, ice house and newly created 'Secret Forest'.
Until end October daily 10am-6pm. Open by arrangement for groups at other times of the year. N.B. free access is for tours of the Castle only and not for the Country Centre.
