Mellerstain House

Robert Adam's first important commission in Scotland and, although adorned with castellations and linking two earlier pavilions ( by Adam's father, William), Mellerstain is essentially a Georgian house. Its interior Adam decoration is one of Scotland's top architectural glories; light intricate classical motifs, hardly touched in 200 years, adorn the walls, fireplaces and ceilings of the perfectly proportioned main rooms (especially the Music Room, Library and Drawing Room). Pictures by Van Dyck, Ruysdael, Gainsborough and Ramsay, among others.



Features: The wide sweep of garden terraces and parkland, designed in 1909 by Sir Reginald Blomfield, were superimposed on an axial design of William Adam. Formal bedding, running down to a lake with views of the Cheviots; cottage ornee (1825) and woodlands dating from Lady Grizel Baillie's 1725 improvements.
