This property is free for HHA Friends
This remarkable house is a blend of the intimate and the grand, with its village like Tudor period courtyards fronted by the palatial Versailles style additions made by Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu in the 1690s. The spirit of a family home goes hand in hand with the magnificent formality of the Great Hall or, the series of State Rooms virtually untouched in 300 years. Rich in the decorative arts - vividly fresh tapestries, silver, Sevres porcelain, renowned French and English furniture – Boughton is home to painting masterpieces by El Greco and Van Dyck, Batoni and Gainsborough to name but a few.
The gardens and landscape offer rich variety. Spring woodland plantings with bulbs and daffodils, herbaceous borders, walled gardens which lead into the wider designed landscape extending over 100 acres, framed by ancient lime avenues and immaculately edged canals.
Boughton is looked after by a Charity, the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust. All surplus revenues from visitor admissions help support the charity’s work of conservation and education.
This property offers free access to HHA Friends and Members during normal opening hours - please check opening times.

Visitor Opening Times
2017: House & Gardens: 15-17 Apr, daily in Aug. Gardens, café and gift shop open at 12 noon. House entry by guided tour only, 1pm-5pm (last tour 3.30).
For your greater enjoyment, we offer two main styles of tour. The Great Hall tour encompasses many of the major rooms and concludes in the beautiful Great Hall, perfect for those with a general interest in the rich history and art of Boughton. The more comprehensive State Room Tour ascends the grand entrance staircase to include the High Pavilion and State Apartments created for the visit of William III. Numbers are limited for all tours and if you would like to guarantee a tour on a given day it is wise to pre book at least a week in advance.
We also offer the rather more eclectic Book, Beds and Beyond tour once per day at an additional £12.50 per person.
HHA Friends and Members: one free Tour, £2 to join both.
Please note that these opening times are correct to the best of the HHA’s knowledge, as advised by the property. Opening times may change and a property may very occasionally need to close at short notice. We therefore recommend you check with the property before your visit, by phone or on the property’s website, especially if your journey is likely to be a long one.
