Boughton House

This remarkable house is a blend of the intimate and the grand, with its village like Tudor period courtyards fronted by the palatial Versailles style additions made by Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu in the 1690’s. The spirit of a family home goes hand in hand with the magnificent formality of the Great Hall or, the series of State Rooms virtually untouched in 300 years. Rich in the decorative arts - vividly fresh tapestries, silver, Sevres porcelain, renowned French and English furniture – Boughton is home to painting masterpieces by El Greco and Van Dyck, Batoni and Gainsborough to name but a few.

The gardens and landscape offer rich variety. Spring woodland plantings with bulbs and daffodils, herbaceous borders, walled gardens which lead into the wider designed landscape extending over 100 acres, framed by ancient lime avenues and immaculately edged canals.

Boughton is looked after by a Charity, the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust. All surplus revenues from visitor admissions help support the charity’s work of conservation and education.

2012 Opening Dates

House and Gardens Open: April 7-9, May 5-7, June 2-5, August 1-31st, (guided tour only except weekends and BH Mon), gardens and cafe open noon-5pm, House 2pm-5pm, last entry 4pm.

Gardens also open: February 25-26 (snow drop day), March 31st – April 1 (daffodil day) and October 27-28 (autumn colour), 11am – 3pm.
