A fine Georgian house, built for Benjamin Agar by Peter Atkinson whose father was a partner of John Carr of York. Work at Brockfield started in 1799 and was completed in 1807. The most dramatic features of the house are the entrance hall with its stone cantilevered staircase and the adjoining oval drawing room with an identically shaped room above.

It is now the house of Mr & Mrs Simon Wood. She is the daughter of the late Lord Martin Fitzalan Howard who bought the house with Lady Martin in 1951. He was a brother of Miles 17th Duke of Norfolk, their mother, Baroness Beaumont, being heiress of the Stapletons of Cartlon Towers near Selby, and their father the 3rd Lord Howard of Glossop.

Brockfield retains its orginal architectural features, a good selection of furniture and some interesting Stapleton and Howard family pictures, while clearly remaining a much loved family home.

There is a permanent exhibition of paintings by members of The Staithes Group (c.1895 - 1925). These artists, at the cutting edge of edge of English impressionism, formed one of the six colonies of painters around the coast of Britain at that time, Staithes being a timeless fishing village north of Whitby. The Brockfield collection, some of them available for sale, forms the largest permanent exhibition of such works in the country. They can be viewd by appointment at any time.
