A fine stone Palladian villa designed for the Catholic Middleton family by James Paine and completed in 1763 with a deep central pediment and two flanking pediments, the piano nobile of ashlar and, below, stone rusticated banding. Inside the central oval hall is Paine's masterpiece - a magnificent cantilevered staircase with crinoline balusters by Paine's favorite ironworker called Wagge. The interiors have been adjusted but retain many of Paine's original features.
