A unique gem of Jacobean architecture, with steep gables and towers in the centre of each side of its rectangle topped with octagonal ogival domes. Built of brick and reminiscent of Hatfield, although on a smaller scale. George Calvert, the builder, was Secretary of State to James I. Later Calvert founded the colony of Maryland in America, and named its capital after his peerage, Lord Baltimore.
