Elizabethan manor house which has been in the Knight family for over 400 years and once belonged to Jane Austen's brother, Edward, who was adopted by childless Knight cousins. It is now a specialist and unique library of over 9,000 titles focusing on women’s writing in English from 1600 to 1830, and also the Knight family library containing some volumes that were known to Jane Austen. There are family portraits as well as those of women writers.
Features: 18th century parkland, working shire horses and early 19th century organic walled kitchen garden designed by Edward Austen Knight.
Visitors can explore the gardesn on a self-guided tour Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm. House Tours (need to book)- Tues and Thurs at 2.30pm (Tues only in Jan and Feb).

Elizabethan Manor House - restored English landscape gardens. Many opportunities for film and photography. Past productions include 'The Borrowers', 'Love on a Branch Line' and 'There's something about Austen'.
Chawton House Library works in partnership with Jane Austen's House to provide school visits to both sites for primary and secondary schools. Chawton House Library can also provide visits for students of the women authors in the collection, studied at GCSE and A level. We can also provide school visits that look particularly at the estate and traditional farming methods.

Bespoke group tours for 10 people or more can be booked from Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm for £7.50 per person. These can be tailored to specific interests and we will be happy to discuss your requirements and any particular requests.

Three rooms licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 100 people. The South Lawn is available for larger marquee receptions.
These can be catered for in the house, gardens or the wider estate.
