Cothelstone Manor was given to Sir Adam de Coveston by WIlliam the Conqueror, and there has been a house on the site since, during which time it has been in the hands of only two families.
The present house, listed grade II*, is believed to date from the early to mid 16th century, but suffered heavily at the hands of General Blake during the civil war when it was partially demolished by cannon fire. The remains were repaired and for the next 200 years it served as a farmhouse. The Manor was finally restored to its former glory in 1856. Cothelstone is in a magical setting with its many warm quantock stone walls and its interesting and unusual features, including the late 16th century gazebo, 'an unusual survival' according to its listing.
Internal - Galleried Hall.
External - Grade II* Triple entrance archway, 16th century Grade I* Gatehouse, Grade II* Manor House, Grade II* Gazebo.
