One of the most magnificent Elizabethan mansions, completed in 1580 in the Italian renaissance style by mason-architect Robert Smythson for Sir John Thynne, Steward to Protector Somerset, whose descendants are now Marquesses of Bath. Restored and embellished by later architects, including a suite of interiors by Crace, the house is still a very complete ensemble with collections of Italian old masters, French and English furniture, portraits and four libraries.
Features: Set in landscaped parkland with a series of lakes by 'Capability' Brown, there are now restored parterres and several mazes.

You may well have paid a visit to Longleat House in recent times but have you poked around in Longleat's cupboards, peeked behind closed doors and seen parts of the House previously closed to visitors?
Longleat will be offering VIP Mystery Tours for November and December 2009 plus some brand new tours for January to March 2010: Open Cupboards, Meet the Ancestors, Behind the Scenes, and Architecture Tours.
Subject to the tour you could get to see the hidden cavity behind the library books in the Green Library where the 2nd Marquess hid to avoid talking to visitors; see inside the exquisite Louis XV games table to reveal the board games hidden within; glimpse the recently discovered stone steps leading from the garden passage into the garden and more!
Find out about the silver coins from the 16th century shuffleboard table in the Great Hall of Longleat House and learn why they have the initials IT when the owner was John Thynne or see if you can spot the Servants Door in the Breakfast Room. These are just some of the questions that may be explored and answered.
All VIP Tours to Longleat House for groups include a lunch in the Cellars Café and a 10% discount in Lady Bath's Shop along with the guided tour itself.
