A Elizabethan house of 1582 bought by Paul Methuen in the mid-18th century to house his major collection of 16th and 17th century Italian and Flemish master paintings and statuary. In the mid-19th century the house was enlarged to contain a second collection, purchased in Florence, of fashionable Italian masters and stone-inlaid furniture. The collection includes work by Chippendale, Adam brothers, Van Dyck, Rosa, Rubens, Lippi, Reynolds and Romney.
Features: Brown and Repton set out the park, which includes specimen trees (such as the Oriental Plane, now with a 200-yard perimeter). Formal gardens include herbaceous borders, lily pool, rose garden and a rare stone bath house.
20 March-30 September. Daily, except Mondays & Fridays but including Bank Holidays 2-5.30pm. Last admission 5pm. Winter: 1 October-19 March (closed December).
