Medieval Weekend at Muncaster

Muncaster Castle in the Western Lake District will turn into a living history experience this August Bank holiday, with an interactive medieval weekend.

An army of Lancastrian soldiers from the Red Wyvern Re-enactment Society will be descending on the Castle from 28 to 30 August to camp in the gardens for the weekend, with the aim of showing visitors what life in the 15th Century was like.

The 15th century included the Hundred Years War and the Wars of the Roses, and the Society will be performing battle re-enactments and demonstrating the weaponry and armoury used in such conflicts.

Visitors can even get an idea how difficult life would have been for the soldiers by trying on some of the heavy armour, a full suit of which could weigh up to four stone, as well as getting their hands on some of the weaponry which the soldiers would have used in battle.

The Red Wyverns will also aim to show the more general side of medieval life, including rustling up some authentic medieval fare in the army kitchen.

The medieval weekend is part of Muncaster Castle’s Summer of Fun, with events taking place every day in August, including jester performances by past and present ‘Fools of Muncaster’. There will also be jester workshops for children on selected dates.

The Castle will be open from 12.00 to 4.30pm every day over the August Bank Holiday weekend and Muncaster’s Gardens, World Owl Centre, MeadowVole Maze and Creeping Kate’s Kitchen are open daily from 10.30am to 6.00pm.
